Boeing 747-200 - Alitalia
Alitalia is the biggest airline of Italy and it is officially named: Compagnia Aerea Italiana S.p.A. 'Ali' means 'wings' in Italian. The airline's main bases are Rome Leonardo da Vinci-Fiumicino Airport and Milan Malpensa Airport. Today's company is a merger of the old Alitalia, which went bankrupt in 2008, and another Italian airline, Air One.
The original Alitalia was formed in 1947 and became a widebody operator in 1970. That year Alitalia received two Boeing 747-100s, soon followed by the 747-200, of which the airline flew nineteen. All 747s have left the fleet. Alitalia once signed for five 747-400s, but cancelled the order and took Boeing 777s instead. The photograph shows a 747-200 at Miami International Airport.
