Boeing 747-200B(SF/SUD) - Southern Air
Southern Air is an American cargo airline based at Norwalk, Connecticut. It presents itself as a low-cost cargo airline and it offers freight services with a number of Boeing 747-200 freighters. The company was formed in 1999 when it acquired assets from the earlier long-haul, heavy-lift cargo airline Southern Air Transport, which was based at Columbus, Ohio.
Southern Air flies an all-widebody fleet of several Boeing 747 versions and a number of Boeing 777F freighters. The photograph above, taken at Frankfurt Rhine/Main Airport, shows a Boeing 747-200F (SCD) in the new livery of the airline. The photograph below shows a Jumbo Jet originally built as a passenger Boeing 747-200B with a short upper deck. It was delivered to the Dutch airline KLM as PH-BUI and later modified to get a stretched upper deck (SUD). The official designation of this version is 747-200B(SF/SUD). KLM withdrew the aircraft from service in April 2003. A few months later, after modification to Special Freighter configuration, Southern Air started flying it as N746SA. This photograph is taken at Miami International Airport.
