Boeing 747-400 - South African Airways

South African Airways (SAA, formerly also known as SAL, Suid-Afrikaanse Lugdiens) is the biggest airline of South Africa. It was founded in 1934 by the South African government after it acquired another airline, Union Airways.

SAA ordered its first widebody aircraft in March 1968: five 747-200Bs, of which the first was delivered in October 1971. South African Airways also became operator of the Airbus A300 and Boeing 767, and today operates the A330-200, and the A340-200, -300 and -600. The A340-600 replaced the Boeing 747s.

The airline flew 23 Jumbo Jets: the 200B, the -200M (first delivered in 1980), the 747SP, the -300 (1983) and the -400. The first of eight Boeing 747-400s was delivered in January 1991. Six were powered by Roll-Royce RB211-524H-turbofans (see photo) and the other two with General Electric CF6-80C2B5Fs. The last two were originally ordered by Phillippine Airlines, but not delivered to that airline. The photograph is taken at London Heathrow Airport.
