Ahead of the 1972 merger with BOAC (British Overseas Airways Corporation) to form British Airways, BEA (British European Airways) ordered Lockheed L-1011 TriStars for its high density routes. A company demonstrator aircraft visited the Farnborough Air Show in BEA-colours in 1972, but the type was never delivered in this livery. Ten Tristar series -1s and -100s were delivered from 1974 in the new British Airways colours. These aircraft moved to charter subsidiary British Airtours when series 200 Tristars were delivered from 1980.
In 1979 and 1980 Lockheed built six TriStar 500s for British Airways's long-haul network, but the aircraft were not a success for BA. Already in 1983 all six aircraft were sold to the Royal Air Force for conversion to aerial tanker and transport aircraft.
Lockheed TriStar-200 MSN 193N-1212 was delivered to British Airtours in May 1981 and joined the fleet of British Airways in September 1985. In June 1992, it was leased by BA to Kuwait Airways for a couple of months. In July 1994 the aircraft was taken over by American International Airways and converted to freighter. It returned into service in January 1995. Later users were Kitty Hawk International (1999), Caribjet Cargo (2002), Star Air Jordan (2003) and Sky Eyes Airways (2005).
